Sho I look scary in pictures. Not the point. Received three awards from Chinese school. That's one more than last year :) but it was my first year not getting straight A's ):

I have a feeling I'm going to be seeing some C+'s on my actual school report card this term.. freak. I didn't even get an A for Japanese. Did I really get 99% last year? I've always gotten an A in Japanese. Japanese was always my best class. Very--- very-- very- sad. And I want to take Japanese HL and the JLPT again next year? Pshh, I thought I was sho good.

Oh well. The year's over. Sign my yearbook Monday (:``yourone&only.

Saturday, June 16, 2007

I'm not even going to try thumbnail-ing all my pictures before editing.. there are too many and I'm too tired. Going to post them all on Facebook some day. Yeah, some day ;p

DAY 1: Wednesday, June 13 (Introduction/SDS)
Got my wake up call from Clara at 4:22 am.. which was late.. her mom had to wake her up. Gave wake up call to Enoch. Went to school on time.. I think. I was on bus #1 (: Arrived at Tsawwassen early and waited around forever to board the ferry. Others ate their snack (which looked more like lunch..) and I bought my lunch to save until noon. Took 'professional' pictures on the deckk and then watched cartoons. Arrived at Swartz Bay and took another bus to Pearson College. Mm.. along the way took pictures of people. Arrived at Pearson and picked our dorms. Clara and I roomed with Rena and Vivian in Victoria House. We were in room #5 which was AWEESOMEE. There were two beds further into the room ('top of the room') and two beds closer to the door ('bottom fot he room'). One of the beds from the 'top' and one from the 'bottom' were separated by a wooden sliding panel. You could slide it close so you didn't see that top/bottom bed from the other side or open it so you can see (: heheh. Anyways. Four closets for us four, and they were very very pretty. Each bed had a light on the wall. We were near the washroom, very convenient! Anyways.. ;p Then did the Four Area Survey.. went to the stream first, EW. My least favourite place. Second was field. Very nice.. although there was like nothing to look at. We got to eat our lunch there! heheh, a nice place to eat. I wouldn't want to eat at the stream. For some reason, Neo and Terence ditched their group and ended up following us heh. The third area was the intertidal, my favourite place. The mountain was the last area. Don't like it very much.. but don't mind doing any research there.. except for the ant hill x _ O. Suu I did my Self-Directed Study (SDS) at the intertidal! heheh (: collected water and rocks, very simple experiment XD but the pH stuff took a long time in the lab. Dinner was lasagna, garlic bread (or I thought it was anyways), and fruits/vegetables. After dinner we continued with SDS but I finished near the beginning suu we played. We weren't allowed to stay in our rooms to sleep.. blah. Oh well, played on the swings.. took some pictures. Then for evening activities, I watched the guys play some basketball, took some pictures, and then played some volleyball <3. Mug up was very nice. Hot chocolate was yummmy .. cause all the sugar was stuck to the bottom of the cup ;p wasn't very sweet and that was good. Went to dorms and had lights out at 10:45 pm but kept talking untill past midnight or something zzz. Lots to gossip ;D

DAY 2: Thursday, June 14 (Group 4 Project)
Planned on waking up at 6:00 am to shower but Clara went back to sleep after her alarm so I did too XD. Our wake up call was 6:30 am, so we had 30 minutes to prepare and we took a shower anyways. Breakfast was sausages, eggs, hashbrowns/potato pieces, cereal, and yogurt. We started our Group 4 Project after breakfast. In my group were Nicholas (biology), Neal (biology, chemistry), Nancy (biology, chemistry), Clara (physics), and Yu Meng (chemistry, physics). Somehow.. Clara and I got the idea that we were going to go to the intertidal but the guys thought we were going to the stream.. suu they led us to the stream and we were like.. huhh.. how come it's taking so long? 'Cause the intertidal is very close to the buildings but the stream is like a ten minute walk through the forest. Yeahh.. and not only the stream, but the very very far/deep part where it's alllll muddy. and since I thought we were going to the intertidal, I didn't prepare for the wetness/muddiness/dirtiness. It was VERY VERY VERY muddy. Nicholas and Neal took off their shoes and walked barefoot. We were walking and walking and walking and our shoes got muddier and muddier and muddier. We would get stuck and had to keep trying to pull our feet and shoes up. Clara would keep pullllling and then fall forward ): We went farrrrrrr out near where the stream connected to the intertidal. It was more than 400 meters. At every 40 meters, chemists took a water sample, biologists took a population sample, and physicists recorded the water current. So after three hours of that, Clara and I headed back to our cabin. We dumped everything we wore, even shos, into the bath tub and soaked the mud out. Then we finally went to lunch! My favourite meal out of the three days, it was taco with some kinda meat (beef?) and cheese annd beans, bananaanana/apple, and vegetable salad. Loved the tacos! but this time I didn't have time to get seconds ): Afterwards we got ready for our second trip to the stream.. but unfortunately (or fortunately? ;p) the tide was high and the stream was flooded and that would ruin our experiment so we had to continue it the next day. Had some free time since we couldn't do our Group 4 (but really, we should be doing SDS or somehow working on the Group 4 without needing to be at the site.. says Willard/Gabbot). Dinner was at 6:00 pm. Not my favourite meal.. but it was alright: whole wheat (ew) bread, corn, other vegetables, baked potato, and chicken .. breasts? I couldn't tell. HOWEVER, the desert was delicious! Icecream! I had two servings muahAHAHA. With lots of sprinkles, chocolate chip, marshmallows, and some chocolate syrup. After dinner, suppose to work on Group 4, but couldn't because of the tide so fooled around more! heh. Oh yeah, we had to clean the bath tub.. drain out the water and collect all the mud so it doesn't go down the drain. Let's just say it was very tiring and time consuming. Did it before dinner and after dinner. Suu.. went to intertidal and saw people skipping stones! I tried and I could finally make a stone skip two times! ;D I have never succeeded before. Bryan skipped one that was like twenty times or something! It went farrrr... suu awesome. For evening activities I played vollllllleyball! Mug up again, not very.. mm.. enthusiastic this time. Lights out on time and didn't sleep very late.

DAY 3: Friday, June 15 (SDS/Group 4 Project)
Again, was going to wake up early to shower but, again, we slept. I took a shower anyways.. and then ate breakfast: pancakes, bacon, and hashbrowns/potatoes <--love. After breakfast, had to pack ): All my dirty clothes and stuff were washed.. but wetttt. When done packing, we could work on SDS or Group 4. We definitely had to work on Group 4. So we decided to measure out the whole river and I being a chemist, will take water samples and go to the lab to calculate the salt (we've got a coooool method, unlike boiling.. ;p) while the biologists and physicists continued working at the stream. The chemistry part surprisingly did not take as long as the previous day, there were not many samples to work with for this day. After submitting our work for SDS and Group 4, lunch was served! Some kind of noodle and bean soup -- very good, beef salami/cheese/ham and pineapple pizza, and vegetable/fruits. I took two slices of pizza and Nancy gave me one piece.. suu I had three pieces and I couldn't finish one of them. I packed it so I could eat it on the bus ;D the teachers made sure we ate everything we put on our plate ._.`` after lunch, nothing exciting happened.. we bussed to the ferries, we ferried back, bussed to Churchill, and got a ride home from .. John's.. friend. Yay, home!

Sunday, June 10, 2007

IB YEAR I FORMAL
@ St. John's College (UBC)

First helped in the kitchen to prepare the food for our guests -- over 1000! Nehh was suu tiring but suu fun. Washed watermelons. Spread cream cheese on bagels, and other people put smoked salmon/ham/cucumber on them. Then arranged some food on platters.. didotherstuffatesomefooddidotherstuff.. ;p

Then catered some honey garlic chicken to the first guests :D Mmmm... I can still smell them. Helped with punch afterwards. OMSGHSHH it is the most difficult task nehh. The orange and cranberry juice were in those concentrated frozen cans in the freezer. The ginger ale was in a storage room. The two punch bowls were outside the kitchen. They ran out suu quickly! I had to go to the freezer to get the juices first, and I couldn't hold more than four cans each trip. Then open one orange (which was hard to do) and pour them in one bowl. Then open one cranberry (which was hard to do) and pour them in the same bowl and mix them. Then run back to get the ginger ale and pour that in the same bowl and mix them. And if in the bowls were these frozen rings made up of I think strawberries and strawberry or raspberry juice. If they melted I had to run to a refrigerator (separate from the freezer.. the freezer is one big room) and get it. But during all that, the guests were filling up their cups with the punch so at times they got really really sweet punch.. ``.__. After awhile, this old lady just kept standing at the table with me and automatically helped herself to helping me serve the guests.... which I didn't even plan on doing because I had no time to serve while mixing. So I decided to let her do some work ;p ;p and I ran to get the ginger ale and just let it stay at the table so I didn't have to run to get it.. except we used up one ginger ale bottle every 10 minutes and I had to go get more bottles. There were at least seven ginger ale bottles, 16 cans of orange juice, 16 cans of cranberry juice, 4 of those frozen rings.. and we still ran out before the event ended XD. At one point Clara showed up to help serve and that was around the time we were almost out of stock. So I went and picked up garbage from the tables. After everything.. and many people were full, just standing around talking.. andafterIstolemorefood.. I don't really remember what happened. We were suppose to help clean up.. but instead we helped by eating some crackers Jang said we could eat XD. Then went to the auditorium for performances. Didn't take pictures of performances ): was busy with my sodoku ;p

Wednesday, May 23, 2007

I never really truly realized and thought of this O; but it's suu obviousss..

Think of a photo of a random European or American celebrity. See it? The exaggerated toothpaste smile? Now think of Japanese manga character and tell me its most striking trait? The enormous eyes? Our culture seems to determine which part of the face we use to express emotions, and this is also reflected in the emoticons we use online. The Japanese differentiate emoticons using various symbols for their eyes, Western users distinguish them mostly through the mouth. At least that's the conclusion of research done by Masaki Yukia, William W. Madduxb and Takahiko Masudac.

"The authors test this proposal using students in Japan and the US, who were shown photos in which various combinations of eye and mouth expressions were Photoshopped onto a single face. Consistent with their model, Japanese students consistently rated those pictures in which the eyes were happier than the mouth as being more happy overall than their American counterparts. In contrast, when the mouth had a happy expression, US students rated the overall expression as happier, regardless of what the eyes are up to.

The researchers noted research suggesting that this eye/mouth bias extends to the online world by citing research which suggested that the Japanese tend to use emoticons with expressive eyes and a neutral mouth (^_^) while Americans did the opposite : -)"

PS: If this is the first time you hear about "Kao-moji" (or Japanese emoticons), note that the big difference is that they can be read horizontally whereas the Western emoticons "require" a 90 degrees counter-clockwise rotation of the head. Some basic ones for you to compare:

Smiling: : -) vs. (^_^)
Crying: :, -| vs. (;_;)
Angry: >:- ( vs (>_<)
Shocked - :-o vs. (@_@)
Kiss - :-* vs. (* ^)(*^_^*)
